Dear Members of the Portsmouth School Community:

 

Parents have encouraged me to survey our community on both the annual school calendar and kindergarten programming for the Portsmouth School Department.  A brief electronic survey (10 questions) can be found at the URL listed below and can be taken at any time up until midnight on Friday, February 29, 2008.  This survey is completely anonymous, and I encourage you to take it so that the Portsmouth School Committee and I can take your views into account.  If by chance, you have completed any other surveys on similar topics, I still encourage you to complete this one so that we have accurate and comparable responses.

 

Please be aware that numerous factors influence the setting of the annual school calendar.  These include state laws and regulations; consideration of quality teaching and learning time; where holidays fall; etc.  For example, if we have a Christmas vacation that is less than two weeks in length this coming year, it will mean that students will need to be in school the Monday and Tuesday immediately prior to Christmas Eve - something that may or may not be desirable from your perspective depending on family holiday plans.  

 

The ultimate decision on the calendar rests with the School Committee and administration with input from our teachers.  However, we would like to be able to include our community's views in our deliberations.

 

Full day kindergarten is something that I personally would very much like to see in Portsmouth.  This said, it will be very difficult to fund this or any other new programming given the budget forecasts at the state and local level, combined with the decreasing property tax cap of Senate Act 3050.  For this reason, the survey includes questions about kindergarten programming preferences, as well as willingness to pay for an additional half day of programming.
